The Winter 2016 edition of the Workers’ Compensation Law Section Newsletter included a very informative article from SBWC Chairman Frank McKay regarding the nationwide opioid overdose problem and its impact in Georgia workers’ compensation settings. The problem is very real and has a significant impact in Georgia, both in terms of financial cost and more importantly the human toll on individuals and their families from inappropriate prescribing and use of these substances. Chairman McKay’s article relies on evidence and information from the CDC and from the National Prescription Drug Abuse and Heroin Summit held in Atlanta. It is evident that the SBWC is going to be looking for ways to ensure that these powerful medications are used appropriately and to curb abuse.
The CDC has published guidelines for prescribing opioids for chronic pain. A link can be found here: https://www.cdc.gov/drugoverdose/prescribing/guideline.html
